We have been brought up around fixed meal times, as if they were as regular as clockwork.

We've been conditioned to eat a certain type of food at a certain time of day. This reigns true in many different countries, although the type of food may differ for each meal time. E.g for breakfast it may be croissants in France, bacon in Britain or waffles in USA.

We are all creatures of habit and it's these habits which make it difficult to change any lifestyle. The problem with eating at set times of the day is that, we may be eating when we are not actually hungry.

Another problem with eating at the exact same time, is that we may be in the same place, around the same eating establishment and so order the same food.
